When Floriade hits town, you know summer is on it’s way. It usually lasts around a month over September and October and it showcases over one million flowers!

You can imagine what this means for Canberra, thousands and thousand of people come out of hibernation and almost like a mass pilgrimage, everyone flocks to Commonwealth Park to see….flowers.

This year I was lucky enough to be invited to a Floriade early bird instameet, where I enjoyed a tour of Floriade with the head gardener – Andrew Forster, before the onset of the crowds.

There is something so relaxing about wandering about rows and rows of flowers in the early morning.

Each year Floriade has a theme, and tied into the 100 year Gallipoli celebrations this year’s theme was Reflections.. Needless to say there were lots of red poppies and ‘remembrance’ type designs.

Featured in the photo above is the head gardener of Floriade who was very elaborate in telling us all about when the flowers are planted, and all the thoughts and processes taken to design the huge gardens.

If you do get along to Floriade, it’s definitely worth taking a ride on the Ferris Wheel to get a glimpse of all the designs from above!

Floriade is on until the 11th of October so make sure you get along to Commonwealth Park. My advice would be to go for an early walk around the gardens, you avoid the crowds and get to see the flowers close up!
